Magnolia Course Tour & History

history-image

The Magnolia Course at Beau Chêne Country Club was also designed by Joe Lee in the newer and eastern section of the property that was formerly known as the Pailet Estate. The interior loop of the Magnolia Course (Holes 1-5 and 15-18) were completed in early 1982. The balance of the holes (6-14) were completed in 1985 as part of a final phase of Beau Chene Subdivision. While the grounds of the course have less history than the Oak Course, the Magnolia Golf Course brings its own level of difficulty with more bunkers and water hazards than the Oak Course. Similar to the Oak Course, there is out of bounds on every hole.

This is a difficult starting hole due to its length and strategically placed fairway bunkers on the right side of the landing area. If you avoid the bunkers to the right, you should have a mid to long iron into this green that slopes from back to front.

Hole # 2 | Par 5

This hole is a straightaway par five with all the hazards close to the green. Big hitters with a good drive can take a rip for this green in two, but the smart play is to lay up short to all the bunkers that guard this green. The fairway narrows the closer you get to the green from the fairway. The approach shot to this green requires accurate yardage to position your ball on the proper shelf of this tiered green.

Hole # 3 | Par 3

This picturesque par three requires an accurate shot to a green protected by a lake to the right and a very difficult bunker to the left that you must avoid as the green runs away from you if you find yourself in the sand. The best play on this short par three is to keep your tee shot below the hole.

Hole # 4 | Par 4

Distance can be deceiving! This short par four requires a well-placed driver or three wood off the tee. This will leave the golfer with a short to mid iron shot to a rather shallow green that is guarded by a mincing bunker that fronts the right side of this green along with a bunker that protects the back of this green. The safe play on your approach is to aim for the middle of the green.

This is the #1 handicapped hole on the Magnolia course and for good reason. This hole requires a long drive to secure a clear approach to the dogleg left. With a solid drive, golfers will be left with a mid to long iron to this green that is guarded by a pine tree to the left and a greenside bunker to the right. A par on this hole is a very good score.

Hole # 6 | Par 5

This short par four requires a well-placed drive off the tee. A lake borders the entire right side of the fairway. With a fairway that runs from left to right the ideal drive is left center. With a good drive, golfers will be faced with a short to mid iron to a two-tiered green that is protected by a front bunker. A lofted approach is required. If you don't want to get frustrated putting, it's important to place your approach on the proper level of the green.

This is a three shot hole and the safe play is to lay up short of the lake that guards the front of the green leaving only a wedge or sand wedge to the green. The putting surface on this par five is very shallow and requires an accurate third shot. The distance on this hole is deceiving.

Hole # 8 | Par 4

This is a dogleg right that allows golfers the opportunity to chew off as much as they feel comfortable risking. The ideal drive for the longer hitter is to aim for the fairway bunkers and hit a soft fade that will shorten the playing distance of this hole. For those golfers that prefer a more conservative route the ideal play is to hit a straight drive and take the water out of play on the right which will leave a longer approach shot to a green that slopes from back to front.

Hole # 9 | Par 3

The ninth is the most difficult par three on the Magnolia course because of length as well as the forced carry to this green over a large bunker that stretches the entire front. There is no bailout area on this hole and a par is a good score.

Hole # 10 | Par 5

To start your inward nine holes, this nice par 5 is reachable for the longer hitters with a risk-reward option. The safe play is a solid drive and a lay up to the yardage that you feel comfortable with for an easy approach shot.

Hole # 11 | Par 13

Choosing the correct club for this hole is an absolute must. This par three has a very shallow green that runs from the left to the right and is protected by a bunker behind the green and a lake to the right of the green. The wind affects this hole more than any other on the course.

Hole # 12 | Par 4

This medium length par four can play tough if you miss the fairway and hit one of the three bunkers that guard both sides of this fairway. A solid drive will leave you with a mid to short iron to a two tiered green that slopes from back to front. It is important to hit your approach shot to the correct distance depending on the pin location.

Hole # 13 | Par 4

Thirteen is a difficult dogleg left that requires a long enough drive to secure an open look to the green. The further left you hit your tee shot the more difficult your approach shot will be. A smart play is a drive down the right center which will leave you with an uphill approach shot to a the most severe green on the course.

Hole # 14 | Par 4

On the longest par four of the inward nine, a very generous driving area gives players the opportunity to reach for a little extra. But because of it's length, even with a good drive, players will have a mid to long iron into a very large green. Take par and move on.

Hole # 15 | Par 3

The last of the Magnolia par threes requires the correct club selection. This green has a spine that runs across the center of this green which makes putting difficult depending on where your tee shot is placed. A large front bunker to the right and a greenside bunker to the left protect this green.

Hole # 16 | Par 5

This is a demanding driving hole as your tee shot must carry a lake shooting slightly uphill, which makes the yardage play a little longer than stated. There is a beautiful oak tree that guards the right side of this fairway. You would be wise to play away from this majestic tree, playing short of the well-protected green, which will leave you with a wedge or short iron.

A nice par four that doglegs slightly to the left. The ideal drive here is right center, avoiding the fairway bunker on the left. This will leave the player with a mid-iron to a very receptive green. It is a nice hole to help your score.

This is a very challenging and often very penalizing hole for all skill levels. Eighteen is a very demanding driving hole because of the large fairway bunker to the left and the two large live oaks that guard the right side of this fairway. Once you have properly positioned your drive you must now execute your approach shot to a green that is sloped from back to front. A word for the wise: attempt to place your approach on the same level as the pin.
